5 Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Summer Camp for Your Special Needs Child

It’s that time of year when you need to decide what your child will be doing this summer.  It’s also the time to start saving your child a spot at the camp of your choice.  But how do you choose?  Not all camps are for every child, whether or not they have a disability.  Here are 5 things to consider when making your decisions.

When choosing a camp, especially a day camp, most parents consider the location and whether or not it is close to their home or job and how it will affect their commute.  Other things to know about include the structure of the camp.  Some camps are overnight camps, and some are day camps.  Some camps are inclusionary, and some camps are specific to children with special needs.  Camps may be educationally based, therapy based, or activity based.  Communication with you is also important so you know what your child is doing each day and how their day went.

Even though you’re the one choosing camp, it’s important to consider your child’s interests. Not all kids enjoy outdoor activities, and some have difficulty staying inside all day. You need to find out if the camp is equipped to handle your child’s disability and accommodations needed for both physical and behavioral needs.

Now that you know the camp is set up for your child, you will want to know what the days and hours available are. Camps may offer before and after care for additional charges, but you will need to ask for yourself. Other important information to know is regarding the staff at the camp. Be sure to ask what the ratio is for campers to staff. You can also ask what the training and background of the staff is. Once you’re confident in these areas, be sure you find out what the activities your child will have access to. The camp may have options to sign up for individual weeks or for the whole summer camp; there may be weekly themes to choose from.

Camps can be a great time for growth for your child. Many children have an increase in their communication skills after having access to engaging social interactions with peers and staff. They get the opportunity to try new activities, explore interests and just have fun. Camp can also be a time for parents to have a much deserved break from their child’s care.

So, now you’ve found the perfect camp for your child, what is it going to cost? Be sure to ask if camp is all inclusive, or if there are additional charges for specific activities. You can find out if your family qualifies for any scholarship funding. If camp is centered around therapies, your cost could be covered by insurance. Some staff may be able to point you in the direction of other funding sources for camp, although many of these are first come, first served.
